Kern Studios dives into history with production of a ‘new’ Laocoön

Kern Studios is creating a 10 feet high replica of the world famous statue of Laocoön and his sons. Commissioned by one of the New Orleans Mardi Gras Krewes, it will form a signature piece for one of their floats for Mardi Gras 2017.

The statue -currently on display in the Vatican Museum in Vatican City, Europe- was previously scanned with a 3D scanner. Using the available 3D model from that scan, the Kern Studios Digital Fabrication Department created a toolpath for sculpting robot Pixie to mill out the statue in 11 individual pieces that will be assembled later, using no less than 20 sheets of styrofoam.

The statue actually has a fascinating history, vividly described by Jonathan Rome & Gretchen Van Horne on their website.
